Understanding the NDIS
New to the NDIS? We've put together a plain-language guide to help you understand how it works, what you're entitled to, and how Mycare National can support you every step of the way.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government program that provides funding and support to people living with a permanent and significant disability. It is designed to help you achieve your goals, build your independence, and participate in community life.
- Funded by the Australian Government and managed by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency)
- Available to eligible Australians under 65 with a permanent and significant disability
- Provides individualised funding based on your goals and support needs
- You choose your own providers and how your supports are delivered
Am I eligible?
To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet the following criteria:
- ✓Be under 65 years of age when you first apply
- ✓Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder
- ✓Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
- ✓Require support now to reduce your future support needs (early intervention)

What is an NDIS Plan?
Once you are approved for the NDIS, you will receive an NDIS plan — a personalised document that outlines your goals and the funding available to help you achieve them. Your plan is divided into three support budget categories:
Core Supports
Funding for everyday activities and supports — including personal care, community participation, household tasks, and transport.
Capacity Building Supports
Funding to help you build your skills and independence — including life skills development, employment support, and support coordination.
Capital Supports
Funding for higher-cost items such as assistive technology, home modifications, and specialist disability accommodation.
How can my plan be managed?
Agency Managed
The NDIA manages your funding and pays providers directly from the NDIS portal. You can only use registered providers like Mycare National.
Plan Managed
A registered plan manager handles your funding and pays invoices on your behalf. You can use both registered and unregistered providers.
Self Managed
You manage your own funding and pay providers directly. You have the most flexibility and can use any provider you choose.
Mycare National accepts all three plan management types.
